Description
The epic, Mahabharata, has been written about and commented on countless times. It has been the background to any understanding of the cultural heritage of India. But it is not merely the story of an epic war; it is not just a narration of a feud; nor is it just a reflective mirror of human travails and complexities.
It is incredible how many tales of birds and beats there are in the Mahabharata. Many of these are active participants in the events as the nagas and garudas, and several others are fallen kings and rishis. A small transgression, or pride, ego, anger, undue haste or any other fault makes them turn into animals or birds and they must serve out their time before another event or person can turn them free. At other times sages get reborn as birds and so the cycle of births and rebirths goes on with all living creatures rising and falling in the scales of existence according to their desires and actions. Apart from an active contribution to the major events of the main story, tales involving birds and beasts are told to illustrate a code of conduct or aa mode of behaviour. In any case a large part of action takes place in the forests.
